This is the service our Swat route is built around, pickup at your door in Islamabad or Rawalpindi, one driver for the whole trip, and a car that is matched to how far up the valley you are actually going.

Family trip

A family in G-11 wants four days in Swat before the kids go back to school.

Friends to Kalam

A group of friends from Bahria Town wants to reach Kalam and see the river before the weather turns.

Weekend outing

An office team from Blue Area is planning a short trip to Malam Jabba for the weekend.

We do not offer self drive on this route. One driver takes you up and brings you back, whether you stop at Mingora or go on to Kalam. Our office sits in PWD Society, close to the Islamabad Expressway, and this route is one our drivers already know from repeat trips.

The short version: the road is a proper motorway for most of the way, Mingora and Bahrain are on good paved road, and only the last stretch to Kalam gets rough.

155kmM-1 motorway from Islamabad toward the Peshawar Ring Road

The drive out of Islamabad runs on the M-1 motorway toward Peshawar, a 155 kilometer road that passes Hasan Abdal, Attock, Burhan and Swabi before reaching the Peshawar Ring Road (Wikipedia, M-1 motorway). Near Swabi, you leave the M-1 for the M-16, the Swat Motorway, which was inaugurated in August 2016 and opened to traffic on 3 June 2019. Its first phase runs from Nowshera to Chakdara and cut that stretch’s travel time from three hours down to one (Wikipedia, M-16 motorway). From Chakdara, the road continues on to Mingora, the main town of Swat.

Put together, a travel guide to the route describes it as an excellent, well developed expressway corridor that gets travellers into Mingora in roughly 4 to 5 hours from Islamabad (iMusafir, road conditions to Swat and Kalam). That figure holds in normal traffic. A Friday afternoon departure, a long stop at Chakdara, or fog on the motorway in winter can add an hour or more, so treat it as a starting point, not a guarantee, and confirm timing with us closer to your date.

What the road is like, stage by stage

MotorwayM-1 and M-16 to Mingora
PavedMingora to Bahrain, smooth
Mostly unpavedBahrain to Kalam, rocky patches
Jeep trackBeyond Kalam, arranged locally

Going on to Kalam takes longer again. Mingora to Kalam is about 100 kilometers but takes 4 to 6 hours because of the terrain, not the distance. The Mingora to Bahrain stretch is smooth and well paved. Bahrain to Kalam is mostly unpaved, with rocky patches, and the same source flags occasional landslides in the monsoon and winter months (iMusafir). A PakWheels forum thread on the Islamabad to Kalam drive puts the whole trip at around 7 hours and notes that any regular car can reach Kalam without trouble, it is only the ground past Kalam, toward Mahodand, that turns into jeep track territory (PakWheels forum).

    Group

A regular sedan handles Mingora and Bahrain fine on the paved road. Past Bahrain, especially heading to Kalam in the colder months, we send a Revo or Prado instead, since a two wheel drive car can lose grip on the rocky, unpaved sections even with chains fitted. We do not send any vehicle, including the 4x4s, onto the jeep track beyond Kalam toward Mahodand. That last leg is arranged locally with a jeep operator at Kalam, not through us. Tell us on WhatsApp exactly how far up the valley you are going and we will confirm the right car.

Bigger groups

Group and Family Trips to Swat

For a bigger group heading up to Mingora, Bahrain or Malam Jabba together, the Hiace Grand Cabin and the Toyota Coaster both travel this route, within the same limits as any other vehicle in our fleet, meaning the jeep track beyond Kalam is still off limits. Tell us your group size on WhatsApp and we will confirm which vehicle fits.

Pricing

Rent a Car Islamabad to Swat: How Pricing Works

Daily ratewhole car and driver
×
Number of daysthe car is with you
=
Your quotesent on WhatsApp

Swat trips are priced per day, not per kilometer, since fuel prices shift from week to week and the route itself varies with how far past Mingora you go. There isn’t one fixed number published here, since it depends on the vehicle, the number of days, and whether the trip stops at Mingora or continues to Bahrain and Kalam. Message us your dates and destination on WhatsApp and we will send the rate before you book.

Fuel, Tolls and Driver Costs

Car and driver

The car and driver are included in the quoted rate.

Fuel

Fuel can be arranged as a lump sum built into the price, or paid separately as you go, and we confirm which one you want before the trip starts.

Motorway tolls

Motorway tolls on the M-1 and M-16 stretch are part of the trip cost, so raise it with us on WhatsApp if you want it itemized separately rather than bundled in.

Driver food and a place to sleep

An overnight stay in Swat adds one more cost outside the vehicle rate, the driver’s food and a place to sleep. Across the northern areas this typically runs PKR 1,000 to 1,500 a night, and we will confirm the figure for your specific dates when you book.

Season and roads

Swat in Winter and the Kalam Road

Kalam road

Mingora and Bahrain stay open and driveable through most of the year on ordinary tyres. Kalam is a different question once the weather turns. The unpaved Bahrain to Kalam stretch gets rougher with rain and snow, and a travel guide to the route specifically recommends a 4x4 for anyone visiting Kalam in the winter months, since regular cars struggle on the rocky, wet ground even with chains on (iMusafir). We do not have a published closure calendar for this stretch, since one does not appear to exist in the way Murree’s snow season is formally announced each year, so we check current conditions with our own drivers before every winter departure to Kalam and share that with you.

4x4For Kalam in snow season

For a snow season trip, we send a Prado or Revo rather than a Corolla, and our drivers are told to go slowly and avoid sudden braking on wet or icy patches.

If the Road Is Blocked

If a landslide, snowfall or a road closure affects your travel date, message us as soon as you know and we will work out a new date or discuss a refund based on the situation. If your trip is already underway and a closure adds extra days on the road, those extra days are billed at the same daily rate.

Around the valley

Places to Visit

Mingora

Mingora is Swat’s main town and the usual first stop, with its bazaar being the place to shop for local shawls, gemstones and dry fruit.

Saidu Sharif

Saidu Sharif sits right next to Mingora and functions as the administrative center of the valley.

Bahrain

2 hrsbeyond Mingora

Bahrain, about two hours further on a smooth road, sits where the Daral and Swat rivers meet and is a common lunch or overnight stop before continuing to Kalam.

Kalam

Kalam itself, at the top of the paved and semi paved stretch, is the gateway to the Ushu and Utror valleys and to Mahodand Lake, though that last leg needs a local jeep, not our car.

Malam Jabba

2,804 melevation
40 kmfrom Saidu Sharif
2016chairlift running

Malam Jabba, one of only two ski resorts in Pakistan, sits about 40 kilometers from Saidu Sharif at an elevation of roughly 2,804 meters (Wikipedia, Malam Jabba). The resort was rebuilt after being destroyed in 2008, and a chairlift has run there since September 2016, with a five star hotel added in 2020. It draws visitors for skiing in winter and for the cooler weather and views in summer alike.

On the way up, the road passes Fizagat just outside Mingora and then Madyan, before Bahrain. Both are easy places to stop by the river for a break, and the driver can plan them into the day if you want them.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to rent a car from islamabad to swat?

It depends on the car, the number of days, and whether the trip stops at Mingora or goes on to Bahrain and Kalam. We send the exact daily rate on WhatsApp once we know your dates and destination.

How long does it take to drive from Islamabad to Swat?

Roughly 4 to 5 hours to Mingora in normal traffic, using the M-1 and the M-16 Swat Motorway. Going on to Kalam adds several more hours because of the terrain past Bahrain, not the distance.

Can a normal car like a Corolla go all the way to Kalam?

Yes, a regular sedan can reach Kalam on the main road. It is only the stretch beyond Kalam, toward Mahodand, that needs a local jeep, since that ground is not something our cars, including the 4x4s, are sent onto.

Is the road from Islamabad to Swat a full motorway?

Most of it, yes. The M-1 and the M-16 Swat Motorway cover the stretch to Chakdara and on to Mingora. Mingora to Bahrain is a good paved road. Bahrain to Kalam is mostly unpaved, with rougher patches in the monsoon and winter months.

Is fuel included in the rental price?

You can choose either option, a lump sum that bundles in fuel, or a car only rate where you pay fuel separately. We confirm this before you book.

Do I need a 4x4 for Kalam or Malam Jabba?

For Mingora, Bahrain and Malam Jabba, a Corolla is usually fine. For Kalam in the winter months, we send a Revo or Prado instead, since the unpaved stretch gets rough with rain and snow.

Who pays for the driver’s food and stay on an overnight Swat trip?

The customer. Across the northern areas this typically runs PKR 1,000 to 1,500 a night, on top of the daily vehicle rate.

Can I book a Grand Cabin or Coaster for a group trip to Swat?

Yes, both travel this route for a family trip or an office outing. Tell us your group size and we will confirm the vehicle.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancel at least 4 days before your travel date for a full refund.
